Preplanning

There are many advantages to preplanning a funeral. It's a simple procedure that takes little time, but insures peace of mind and relieves loved ones of decision making at a stressful time. In addition, preplanning:

  • Allows you to make arrangements exactly as you want them
  • Sets aside funds so family members will not have to deal with monetary considerations at the time of death.
  • Enables you to purchase your funeral at today's prices. Money is invested to stay ahead of inflation.
  • Funds set aside for a funeral are not considered assets in determining eligibility for MA or SSI.

Where do I start?

Most people have an idea of the type of funeral they want. Your local licensed funeral director can help you make plans. Just call for an appointment. He or she can explain the costs of a complete ceremony or a simple service.

How do I know what to look for?

Avoid aggressive sales tactics used by some sales organizations or agents not affiliated with a funeral home. A licensed funeral director is one who has met the standards set by the State of Wisconsin. State law requires a funeral director to be employed at a licensed funeral home. It is important to remember that your local funeral director is part of your community and is there to help you and your family.

Warning Signs to Watch

While making pre need funeral arrangements is a good idea, consumers must take all the necessary steps to protect themselves from unscrupulous salespeople. One of the best means of protection is working with local people you know and trust. The Wisconsin Funeral Directors Association advises consumers to guard against certain sales pitches. Some messages should send up a mental "warning flag", particularly when they come unsolicited over the telephone. Beware of the following:

  • "We're calling to update our records."
  • "Do you own a cemetery lot?"
  • "Now that you have your cemetery lot, it's time to complete your other pre-arrangements."
  • "We're offering special limited time discounts."
  • "This plan covers everything."
  • "Buy one, get one free."
  • "We have a gift for you if you stop by our office."
  • "Is there a veteran in your family that may qualify for a special deal?"
  • "Were calling from Social Security about your benefits."
  • "You need to come to our office to sign some papers and insure that everything is in order."

In addition, remember to:

  • Read over all contracts carefully before signing.
  • Ask all salespeople to identify themselves, the company they represent and what services they are selling.
  • Seek clarification of anything you're not sure about.
  • Find out the name of the bank or insurance company that is acting as the trustee of the plan.
  • Don't take the word of the salesperson that says they are affiliated with "ABC Funeral Home". Call the funeral home and check.
  • Determine exactly what is covered. If you buy a casket, vault and cemetery lot, you will still require the services of a funeral director.
