Governor Jim Doyle P.O Box 7863 Madison, WI 53707
Dear Governor Doyle:
On
behalf of Wisconsin Funeral Directors Association I want to urge you to
sign SB 338 relating to the maximum amount of funeral and burial
expenses under the funeral, burial, and cemetery expenses program.
We
appreciated the time you took to meet with us in December 2008 to
discuss this proposal. Your encouragement has finally led us to
passage of a bill that would allow Wisconsin families on Medicaid to do
a little bit more for the burial of their loved ones than the nearly
twenty-year-old cap currently allows.
As you know, Medicaid
funerals serve a strong public health interest and it is clearly in the
interests of Wisconsin to continue this vital service. Senator
Lehman’s bill addresses this interest without increasing the state
reimbursement paid for these funerals. It does this by allowing
families, not-for profits and other community organizations to
contribute up to $1,000 more to the cost of a Medicaid funeral.
This
bill and its companion achieved a unanimous vote in the Senate State
Affairs Committee and a unanimous 16-0 vote in the Joint Finance
Committee, a 22-11 vote in the State Senate and a unanimous voice vote
in the State Assembly. Wisconsin’s nearly 500 funeral homes and 1300
funeral directors ask for your continued support and signature of SB
338.
